The York County School Board promoted Dr. Robert George (District 5) to the chairman role for 2016.
Outgoing chairman Mark Medford (District 3) nominated George, who served as vice chairman in 2015, for the chairmanship and earned the role on a 4-0 vote at Monday’s work session.
George is in his third term on the board.
“I am honored, and humbled, by the confidence that my fellow board members have placed in me to serve as chair of this school board,” George, who was home sick on the day of the meeting, wrote in an email to WYDaily. “I am proud of the accomplishments we have made in the eight years I have served this community and I look forward to continuing to work together as a team.”
Barbara Haywood (District 1), who has served on the school board since 1989, was selected as vice chairwoman on a 3-1 vote, with Cindy Kirschke (District 2) as the lone vote against.
“It is my honor to serve this division for 2016 as vice chair. Thank you very much, everybody,” Haywood said at the meeting.
All five school board members began new four-year terms in January, as voters elected all incumbents to the board in November.
