College Watch: Standout Historic Triangle Alumni, Jan. 4-10

It was a loaded week of men’s basketball and swimming around the country.

One of the top standout performances belonged to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill swimmer Ben Colley, a Lafayette alumnus, who won three events during a Jan. 9 meet against the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis.

Men’s Basketball

  • Christopher Newport University sophomore Marcus Carter (Bruton) scored 15 points during a Jan. 6 win against Penn State-Harrisburg. He also scored 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds in a Jan. 9 win against Wesley.
  • Roanoke College sophomore Joey Miller (Grafton) scored 13 points during a Jan. 6 win against Washington & Lee. He also added 24 points and seven rebounds during a Jan. 9 win over Virginia Wesleyan.
  • Roanoke College junior John Fitchett (Lafayette) scored 14 points and pulled down six rebounds in a Jan. 9 win over Virginia Wesleyan.
  • Virginia State University junior Elijah Moore (Grafton) logged 21 points and six rebounds during a Jan. 7 win against Winston-Salem State. He also scored 15 points to go with six rebounds during a Jan. 9 win against Livingstone.
  • Hampden-Sydney junior Jake Duncan (Williamsburg Christian Academy) scored 16 points in a Jan. 5 loss to Randolph-Macon. He also scored 15 points during a Jan. 9 win against Shenandoah.
  • Randolph College senior Corey Brown (Walsingham Academy) scored 11 points during a Jan. 6 loss to Guilford. He also scored eight points to go with eight rebounds in a Jan. 9 win against Randolph-Macon.
  • Louisiana State University senior Keith Hornsby (Oak Hill Academy) scored nine points as the Tigers upset No. 9 Kentucky on Jan. 5. He also scored 10 points during a Jan. 9 loss against Florida.
  • Hampden-Sydney senior Mitch Owens (Walsingham Academy) scored 12 points during a Jan. 9 win against Shenandoah.

Swimming

  • University of Virginia freshman Peyton Baldwin (Hampton Roads Academy) finished third in the 200-yard butterfly, fourth in the 100-yard butterfly and contributed to a fifth-place 400-yard medley relay team during a Jan. 9 win against Notre Dame.
  • William & Mary freshman Joey Rento (Hampton Roads Academy) finished third in the 200-yard backstroke and contributed to a third-place 400-yard freestyle relay team during a Jan. 7 tri-meet against Old Dominion and Duke.
  • William & Mary junior Allie Christy (Bruton) placed fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke and contributed to a fourth-place 400-yard freestyle relay team during a Jan. 7 tri-meet against Old Dominion and Duke.
  • Virginia Tech freshman Carter Kale (Lafayette) finished seventh in the 1,650-yard freestyle during a Jan. 9 tri-meet against Kentucky and Louisiana State University.
  • University of Mary Washignton sophomore Maddy Rymer (Grafton) contributed to a second-place 200-meter medley relay team during a Jan. 9 meet against Salisbury. She also placed fourth in the 100-meter backstroke, fourth in the 100-meter butterfly and fifth in the 200-meter freestyle relay.
  • University of Mary Washington junior Lauren Wood (Jamestown) helped lead a first-place 200-meter freestyle relay team during a Jan. 9 meet against Salisbury. She also placed second in the 50-meter freestyle and second in the 200-meter medley relay.
  • University of Mary Washington senior Nate Hartt (Jamestown) placed second in the 200-meter butterfly during a Jan. 9 meet against Salisbury. He also contributed to a second-place 200-meter medley relay team and a fourth-place 200-meter freestyle relay team.
  • University of North Carolina senior Ben Colley (Lafayette) won the 200-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley and 400-yard freestyle relay during a Jan. 9 meet against Navy.
