The York and Lafayette wrestling teams continued their run in the Virginia Duals on Saturday despite losing in the opening round Friday.
York opened its day against James Wood High in the consolation bracket. York put up a tough fight, but fell short by a final score of 42-36.
The Falcons opened the match six points up with a win via forfeit at 126 pounds. York earned a win at 138 pounds as Mitchell Hamilton pinned Aaron Curd in 4:26, while Tommy Ciccone pinned Tyler Arnold in 1:03 at 145 pounds.
Momentum continued to build for York as John Cassidy earned a quick pin against Austin Duvall at 152 pounds. Kameron Ashe kept the points coming at 160 pounds with a pin against James Youngblood.
James Wood dominated the heavier weights and began turning the tide of the dual, winning six of the final seven bouts. York’s only win in the heavier weights came from Nick Grubbs at 220 pounds.
Elsewhere in the consolation bracket, Lafayette squared off against Nansemond River. Similar to York, Lafayette gave its consolation opponent a hard time but eventually came up short 45-36.
Both Lafayette and Nansemond River started the dual with points due to forfeits. The Rams got six points from a forfeit at 160 pounds, while Nansemond River got 18 points from Lafayette forfeits at 106, 120 and 126 pounds.
Lafayette started strong once the bouts got going. Henry Cohn pinned Matt Culbert at 132 pounds, while Connor Wrann pinned Hunter Tillman at 138 pounds. Kane Hurt followed suit by pinning Aaron Whear at 145 pounds.
The Rams also got wins at 195 pounds from August Tremblay and 220 pounds from Kierien Simpson.
Later in the day, York faced off against Centreville in the loser’s bracket and earned a 50-26 win after starting up 18 points with three Centreville forfeits.
York got wins from Cameron Watkins at 106 pounds, Luke Grubbs at 126 pounds, John Cassidy at 152 pounds, Kameron Ashe at 160 pounds, Xedrix Barbeybo at 182 pounds and Noah Pascarella at 195 pounds.
Lafayette faced off against Peninsula Catholic in the other loser’s bracket dual, earning a 42-27 victory.
The Rams got wins from Anthony Anderson at 113 pounds, Kane Hurt at 145 pounds, Keven Ngiyen at 152 pounds, Griffin Hurt at 160 pounds, Ryan Davis at 170 pounds, August Tremblay at 195 pounds and Kierien Simpson at 220 pounds.
