Michael Hipple (Powhatan) and John McGlennon (Roberts) will serve as chairman and vice chairman on the JCC Board of Supervisors in 2016.

Michael Hipple will reprise his role as chairman of the James City County Board of Supervisors in 2016, while John McGlennon will serve as vice chairman.

Members voted for the Powhatan and the Roberts representatives to lead the board during its organizational meeting Jan. 4.

Hipple served as vice chairman in 2014 before he was tapped to be chairman in 2015.

Sue Sadler (Stonehouse) nominated Kevin Onizuk (Jamestown) for chairman before McGlennon nominated Hipple. Rather than cast yes and no votes for Hipple and Onizuk, Board members each named their preferred candidate. Hipple chose himself and won votes from McGlennon and Ruth Larson (Berkeley) to secure the chairmanship.

Hipple said he was happy to have been selected as chairman and is looking forward to bringing Board members together as a team to move the county forward.

A second year of chairmanship means Hipple will be able to represent the county again on the Hampton Roads Transportation Accountability Commission, which restricts representation to city mayors and county board chairmen.

“It’s hard to get up to speed and learn everything you need to know. It gives [JCC] a little advantage being the same person,” Hipple said, adding he was able to make connections on HRTAC last year that will benefit JCC as it advocates for projects like the Skiffes Creek Connector and extending the widening of I-64 to I-295.

Hipple nominated McGlennon for vice chairman and the board unanimously supported the selection. McGlennon served as chairman in 2007 and vice chairman in 2012.

The board selected members to serve on regional committees and approved its 2016 calendar, which is available online now.
