Despite leading by as many as 11 points, Hampton Roads Academy suffered a 59-57 loss on the road against Steward School on Tuesday.
Hampton Roads Academy faced a tough test in the first half against Steward School with both teams playing even basketball over the first 16 minutes of play. By halftime, both teams were knotted up at 30 points apiece.
The Navigators, which shot nearly 49 percent from the field, struggled in the second half with its free throw shooting. While HRA shot just 54 percent from the free-throw line, Steward School connected on 17-of-18 free throws, including many down the stretch in the fourth quarter.
With the free throw disparity in favor of Steward School, HRA’s lead slowly dwindled toward the end of the fourth quarter until Steward School took the lead and secured the late victory.
HRA (3-6) has now lost three consecutive games and will try to rebound at home on Friday against Nansemond-Suffolk Academy.
