Four swimmers from the Coast Guard Blue Dolphins, a swim team based in Yorktown, will be joining swimmers other local swimmers from 757Swim in the 2015 Speedo Winter Junior Championships, which will be held at Georgia Tech Wednesday through Saturday.
Sophomores Alex Slayton and Danika Katzer from York High School, Hampton Roads Academy senior Jared Norton and Menchville junior Maddie Morello will all be looking to post top times in the Speedo Winter Junior Championships, which is one of the largest youth swim meets in the U.S.
Slayton will compete in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.
About one second away from an Olympic Trials qualifying time in the 100 butterfly and two seconds off in the 100 backstroke, Slayton will also attempt to set an Olympic Trials qualifying time in the two events during the meet.
Her teammate Katzer will compete in the 200 individual medley, 400 individual medley and 200 butterfly, going for an Olympic Trials time in the two individual medley events. Katzer is two seconds off a trials time in the 200 individual medley and three seconds away in the 400 individual medley.
Norton will swim in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, as well as the 200 and 400 individual medley events. Norton’s best chance to hit an Olympic Trials qualifying time will come in the 100 breaststroke, an event in which he is roughly two seconds away from reaching.
Rounding out the Coast Guard Blue Dolphins competitors is Morello, who will swim in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Morello will attempt to reach an Olympic Trials qualifying time in the 50 and 100 freestyle events.
Should any of the local swimmers reach Olympic Trials qualifying times, they will then travel to Omaha, Neb., from June 26 to July 3 to compete for a spot in the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics.
