Single-lane closures between Lee Hall (exit 247) and Jefferson Avenue (exit 255) along Interstate 64 continue this week in both directions as part of the widening project.
The closures began last night and continue through Friday morning, with work beginning as early as 8 p.m. each night and ending at 5 a.m. each morning.
In the overnight hours Tuesday through Thursday, the eastbound right lane will be closed at Fort Eustis Boulevard (exits 250A and 250B). That closure will run the same hours as the rest of the widening work, between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.
Virginia Department of Transportation warns brief traffic stops will occur on the Fort Eustis Boulevard exit ramps on eastbound I-64.
VDOT crews will be conducting paving operations related to the widening. The work is dependent upon the weather.
The first phase of the widening project – projected to cost about $122 million – will add one lane and one shoulder in each direction for the 5.6 miles between Jefferson Avenue in Newport News and Route 143 in York County (exit 247).
The first phase is slated for completion in December 2017.
The entire I-64 widening, which will happen in three phases, will stretch to the second Route 199 interchange in York County (exit 234).
VDOT maintains a page on its website with updated information on the widening.
