Though James City County has no formal plans – nor funding – to widen Mooretown Road, a study is making its way to the Board of Supervisors that would better prepare the county if the project moves forward in the future.
The county’s Planning Commission gave its recommendation for approval of the Mooretown Road Extended Corridor Study Report in a unanimous vote Nov. 4. The supervisors will host a public hearing on the document at Tuesday’s meeting.
The study, from consultant Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, offers three possible routes to widen Mooretown Road between its intersections with the Route 199 interchange and Croaker Road, with one – the alignment that would run along the railroad tracks parallel to Richmond Road – identified as a preferred route.
VHB had previously presented its recommended alignment to the public in the spring. When the study reaches the James City County Board of Supervisors, the board will decide whether to accept the plan as the county’s vision for the area.
Planning Commissioner Richard Krapf (Powhatan) called the board’s recommendation a “starting point” that can guide the county in its consideration of future development applications for Mooretown Road.
Paul Holt, the county’s planning director, agreed with Krapf’s assessment during the Nov. 4 meeting.
“I think it represents a starting point. We do not know a source of funding yet, whether it’s developer funding or what have you, and we don’t know the future land use,” Holt said. “This is a starting point and a conceptual analysis that includes the pros and cons of three alternatives.”
The Board of Supervisors meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 8 in Building F of the county government complex.
