Barbara Haywood will continue to represent District 1 residents on the York County School Board, according to unofficial election results.

Haywood, who has served on the school board since 1989, was re-elected Tuesday in an uncontested race.

She has run unopposed in each election since 1996, when the board went from appointed to elected.

“I would like to give a special thanks to the voters of District 1 for giving me another opportunity to serve on the York County School Board,” Haywood wrote in a statement to WYDaily. “It is my desire to continue to be a voice for public education for all of the students of York County, especially District 1.”

The Virginia Department of Elections reports Haywood received 1,989 votes, or 97.6 percent of the ballots cast. Write-in candidates received 49 votes.

District 1 has 9,272 registered voters.

All election results are considered unofficial until a formal results review, which begins Wednesday, is completed and all provisional ballots are counted.

In a questionnaire with WYDaily, Haywood identified increased teacher compensation, adequate funding for transportation and upgrades to technology as her top priorities for her next four-year term.
