Lafayette lost a tough 2-1 road game to Smithfield in sudden-death overtime Tuesday during the Conference 18 semifinal round.

Smithfield jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first half, but Lafayette responded three minutes later as Lauren Walker scored off a short corner to tie the game at 1-1.

Despite a scoreless second half, the last 30 minutes of regulation were filled with plenty of drama and excitement.

Both teams went back and forth in the midfield and were evenly matched in terms of offensive scoring chances. Lafayette barely edged Smithfield in shots on goal with 15 compared to the Packers’ 14.

After a scoreless second half, the game entered sudden-death overtime with the first goal being the game-winner.

Despite a strong performance from Lafayette goalkeeper Gabby Boesler, who made 11 saves in the game, Smithfield’s Rachel Lange sneaked the ball into the cage for the game-winning goal.

Lafayette (6-6-1) finishes its season a game shy of reaching the Group 3A East tournament, but Coach Chris Jones said he was pleased with his team’s performance in his first year as head coach.
