Walsingham Academy won its first Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools tournament game since 2009 on Tuesday after beating Norfolk Christian 1-0.
Both teams had a fair share of opportunities in the first half, but neither team could break through during a scoreless first 40 minutes.
After Walsingham had multiple scoring opportunities shut down by Norfolk Christian goalkeeper Ben Hilton, the Trojans broke through in the waning moments of the game.
Walsingham’s Landon Gero sneaked behind the Norfolk Christian defense and sent a cross into the box. A Norfolk Christian defender tried to clear the ball, but deflected into the goal for an own goal.
The Trojans (9-8-1) will face a tough test in the next TCIS semifinals when Walsingham Academy travels to play top-seeded Norfolk Academy on Wednesday.
