The 3-mile stretch between the Lee Hall and Fort Eustis exits will continue to have single-lane closures this week.
Traffic in both directions will be affected, as crews from the Virginia Department of Transportation work on paving operations.
This week’s closures began Sunday night, accoding to a VDOT news release.
VDOT said the work is dependent upon the weather, and will begin no earlier than 9 p.m. and end by 5 a.m. through Friday morning.
The first phase of the widening project – projected to cost about $122 million – will add one lane and one shoulder in each direction for the 5.6 miles between Jefferson Avenue in Newport News and Route 143 in York County (exit 247).
The first phase is slated for completion in December 2017.
The entire I-64 widening, which will happen in three phases, will stretch to the second Route 199 interchange in York County (exit 234).
VDOT maintains a page on its website with updated information on the widening.
