Alternating lane closures Route 17 will begin early Sunday morning.
Drivers traveling northbound on Route 17, also known as George Washington Memorial Highway, between Harwoods Mill Reservoir and the Magruder Boulevard ramp should expect single-lane closures that will alternate as work is being conducted between 3 a.m. Sunday and 5 a.m. Monday.
The construction work will allow Virginia Department of Transportation crews to deconstruct the pavement from the connector road, which will lead to the construction of the median.
Traffic will be shifted onto the new lanes of the bridge during the closures, and electronic signs will be posted to alert drivers of the changes. The 35 mph work zone speed limit continues to be in effect between Hampton Highway and Goodwin Neck Road, which includes the stretch that will experience the alternating lane closures Sunday.
The construction work is part of the George Washington Memorial Highway widening project, which began in 2013 and is scheduled for completion in 2016.
The 2.8-mile project will widen Route 17 from four to six lanes between Hampton Highway and Wolf Trap Road.
