virginia department of healthThe Peninsula Health District is asking for the public’s help locating a black Dachshund that bit a person in the vicinity of New Town Avenue on Wednesday.

Officials say the incident occurred near the bus stop across from Sentara Urgent Care in New Town. The dog was being walked by a woman who was also walking two brown Dachshunds.

If the black Dachshund is not located, the victim may have to undergo post-exposure treatment shots to prevent rabies. Anyone who knows the whereabouts of the animal, or who has seen an animal that fits this description in the area, is asked to contact the Peninsula Health District at 757-603-4277.

The dog, if located, will not be taken away from its owner and will be placed on an in-home confinement period of 10 days.

The Peninsula Health District is reminding all citizens to have their pets vaccinated for rabies, report all exposures to animals to doctors and the local health department, enjoy wildlife from a distance and to not feed pets outside or leave trash uncovered.
