The Peninsula Health District announced Wednesday a skunk found in James City county has tested positive for the rabies virus.
Residents and businesses near the 4000 block of Centerville Road near the intersection of Cenverville Road and News Road will be contacted by officials from the local office of Environmental Health Services.
Anyone who believes they may have been exposed to this animal through bites, scratches or contact with its saliva by open wound, eyes, nose or mouth is asked to contact the Health Department immediately at 757-603-4277.
Additionally, anyone who believes their pet may have come into contact with the skunk is encouraged to call the Health Department.
The Peninsula Health District is reminding all citizens to have their pets vaccinated for the disease, report all exposures to animals to doctors and the local health department, enjoy wildlife from a distance and to not feed pets outside or leave trash uncovered.
