Two people saved themselves and their two dogs from a fire in their Durfeys Mill Road home last night.

The home’s occupants called 911 around 9:38 p.m. Sunday after they noticed black smoke coming from the vents and heard the smoke alarms ringing. The two people left the home with their two dogs before firefighters arrived on scene around 9:45 p.m.

James City County firefighters noticed moderate smoke and fire showing from the roof as they arrived at the house, which is located in the Lake Powell Pointe subdivision off Jamestown Road.

Upon entering the house, firefighters saw minimal smoke and no fire in the living areas, but encountered intense smoke and fire once they entered the attic.

The blaze was under control by 10:22 p.m., but firefighters remained on the scene for several hours to remove debris and check for additional fire damage.

The attic suffered significant fire and smoke damage, while the living space has light smoke and water damage.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
