Three miles of Interstate 64, in both directions, will have single lane closures as the widening project continues.
The construction and lane closures will take place between Lee Hall (exit 247) and Fort Eustis Boulevard (exit 250) starting Sunday night.
One travel lane will remain open at all times, according to a VDOT news release. The work will begin no earlier than 9 p.m. and end by 5 a.m. through Friday morning.
The first phase of the widening project – projected to cost about $122 million – will add one lane and one shoulder in each direction for the 5.6 miles between Jefferson Avenue in Newport News and Route 143 in York County (exit 247).
The first phase is slated for completion in December 2017.
The entire I-64 widening, which will happen in three phases, will stretch to the second Route 199 interchange in York County (exit 234).
VDOT maintains a page on its website with updated information on the widening.
