James City County has extended the deadline for its holiday ornament contest to Oct. 23.
Each county, city and town in Virginia has been asked to submit a holiday ornament to be hung on the tree in the Governor’s Mansion ballroom for the 2015 holiday season.
James City County put out the call for ornament ideas in August, with an original submission deadline of Sept. 30. Since then, the contest has been extended in order to generate more interest and participation.
A panel of judges will narrow down the pool of applicants once all entries are in, after which the public will have the chance to vote for their favorite from Oct. 26 to 30. The winning ornament will be announced Nov. 2.
All participants must be 18 or older and must create a handmade ornament no larger than 6 inches out of any material. Participants can submit as many ornaments for consideration as they would like.
Most importantly, the ornaments should reflect something about the area.
“[The ornaments] need to represent James City County, whether it is through historical events, historic persons or any landmark that is typical for James City County,” said Ania Eckhardt, the county’s administrative and FOIA coordinator.
Entries must be submitted via email in the form of a photograph. Once a winner is selected the county will take possession of the ornament no later than Nov. 3 and send it for display at the Governor’s Mansion.
