Citizens who wish to immerse themselves in the world of plants, soil and garden management can register now for the upcoming Virginia Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Training Program for the Williamsburg/James City County chapter.
Master Gardeners is a national program dedicated to promoting responsible use of natural resources and passing on gardening best practices.
The Williamsburg/James City County chapter offers numerous educational workshops, public outreach clinics and social events throughout the year that touch everyone in the community, from schoolchildren to retirees.
This extensive 13-week class will teach participants everything they need to know about flowers, fruits, vegetables, soil, pest and disease management, lawn care, pruning techniques, landscape design and water conservation.
The classroom portion of the Master Gardener Training Program will be led by enthusiastic and knowledgeable local Master Gardeners. It will also include several enriching field trips that will offer students the chance to get up close and hands-on with the plants of the Historic Triangle.
Upon completion of the classroom program, which lasts from Jan. 4 through April 7 and meets for three hours on Monday and Wednesday mornings during that time span, participants must also complete an internship requiring 50 hours of volunteer projects.
The club will provide a variety of opportunities to complete the internship volunteers hours from which students can pick and choose based on their specific interests.
After completing the internship each future-Master Gardener will spend 20 hours assisting the Master Gardener Help Desk before receiving their full certification.
Any individual who submits an application to participate in the Master Gardener Training Program will be asked to attend a brief orientation and personal interview in early November.
There is a course fee of $150, which includes the Virginia Mast Gardener Training Manual and class handouts.
The deadline for application for the 2016 Master Gardener class is Oct. 15. In order to apply, click here or call 757-564-2170.
