Four Historic Triangle golfers — two from Jamestown and two from Lafayettte — competed in the Group 4A state tournament at Glenrochie County Club in Abingdon on Monday.

Jamestown’s William Bell shot an opening round three-over 75, which tied Bell for the fourth overall in the tournament. His teammate Triston Buckley shot a seven-over 79 over the first day of the tournament.

Lafayette was led by Tawni Hatcher, who shot a 13-over 85 through the opening 18 holes. Preston Ruescher followed Hatcher with a 14-over 86 during the first round of play.

The four Historic Triangle players will resume play at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Warhill Sits in Fourth in State Tournament

After the opening round of play in the Group 3A state championship at Glenrochie County Club in Abingdon, Warhill sits in fourth place after posting a 359 as a team.

Abingdon and Hidden Valley are tied for first place with 303 strokes, while New Kent is sitting alone in third place with an opening round 314.

The individual leader after one day of play was Abingdon’s Connor Creasy, who was the only golfer to shoot under par during the round. Creasy carded a two-under 70, which is two strokes ahead of New Kent’s Parker Wallace who shot an even par 72.

The Lions were led by Peter Conway, who shot a 13-over 85, and Austin Beaulieu, who shot a 14-over 86. Bryce Parker was third for Warhill with a 19-over 91, and Blake Sawyer rounded out the Warhill scorers with a 25-over 97.

Warhill will resume tournament play at 9 a.m. Tuesday, when the No. 6 players tee off. The No. 1 players will tee off at 9:50 a.m.

Bruton’s Carr Struggles in Day One of 2A State Tournament

Bruton’s Sam Carr had a rough opening day at the Group 2A state championship at Golden Eagles Golf Club in Irvington on Monday.

Carr, a junior, shot an opening round 26-over 98 during his first appearance in the state tournament.

Round two of the Group 2A state championship will resume at 9 a.m. Tuesday, and Carr will tee off at 10:10 a.m.
