More than 1,200 athletes are expected to descend upon the Historic Triangle for the ninth annual Patriots Triathlon this weekend.
Staged at the newly renovated Jamestown Beach Event Park, the main event of the Patriots Triathlon is the half triathlon that will feature a 1.2-mile swim, a 58-mile bike ride and a 13.1-mile run through areas of James City County on Saturday and Sunday.
“The swim will take place in the James River next to the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry,” said Patriots Triathlon Race Director Greg Hawkins. “The run is completely flat. It goes on a trail system behind Jamestown High School. The bike is really nice. It’s a little bit hilly in the middle, but it’s nothing people can’t handle.”
Despite being a professional race, the prize purse for the men’s and women’s divisions is smaller than other races at $1,800. Winners for the men’s and women’s half receive $400, while second and third place earn $300 and $200, respectively.
The Patriots Triathlon will also feature two other events of different distances, the international and sprint events. The international consists of a 1,500-meter swim, a 24-mile bike ride and a 10k run, while the sprint involves a 750-meter swim, 13-mile bike ride and 5k run.
On Saturday, athletes will depart for the half triathlon at 7 a.m., while the international race starts at 7:30 a.m. The sprint will start at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 13.
While the races are happening during the weekend, drivers are expected to experience traffic delays. On Saturday, delays are expected off Greensprings Road, 4-H Club Road and Route 5 from 7:15 a.m. to noon.
Parking for the event is available inside Jamestown Beach Event Park roughly within half a mile of the staging area and is free of charge.
On Sunday, drivers can expect delays on Greensprings Road, 4-H Club Road and Route 5 from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
Those wanting to register for the race may do so through Tuesday. The half-triathlon costs $220, while the international costs $130. The sprint is the most affordable and beginner-friendly event at $110.
