Walsingham Academy earned a hard-fought 2-1 road win against Covenant on Thursday despite conceding an early goal.
In the first half, a turnover deep in the Walsingham half led to a Covenant goal to go up 1-0 in the early going.
The Trojans did not let the early goal demoralize them, instead countering with a cross that ricocheted off the head of a Covenant defender and for an own goal and a 12th minute equalizer.
Walsingham Academy kept the momentum up from the game-tying goal and broke through again in the 23rd minute.
A hard tackle on Walsingham’s Luke Pitchford inside the box led to a penalty kick that was taken by Kelau Smith. Calmly, Smith slotted the ball past the Covenant (0-1) goalkeeper to put the Trojans on top 2-1.
Walsingham (1-0-1) was able to ride out the rest of the game without giving up another goal, holding onto the narrow victory.
The Trojans will continue their season on Tuesday against Benedictine.
