Clarence Norman Engel, of Williamsburg, died peacefully at his home on Aug. 17, 2015, at the age of 88.

He was born in Baltimore on May 27, 1927. Norman was married to the love of his life, Genevieve L. Engel, for 60 years at the time of her death in October 2010.

Affectionately known as “Pop-Pop” by his grandchildren and great-grandchild, he was a family man above all else. He lived a life of service and was happiest when in the position to help others. He retired as a chief petty officer in 1970 after 28 years in the U.S. Navy and he proudly served on all seven continents of the world.

He also worked for James City County, retiring in 2002 with 20 years of service. He will be fondly remembered for his generous nature, big heart and adventurous spirit.

Mr. Engel is survived by his eldest daughter, Christina Engel Gallagher and her husband, Kevin; youngest daughter, Luann Engel Gunnell; son-in-law, Jim Gunnell; granddaughter, Jennifer Coultas and her husband, Bryan; granddaughter, Amanda McLernon and her husband, Zack; grandson, James Gunnell; and great-granddaughter, Arya McLernon, who always brought light to his eyes and a smile to his face.

The family would like to give special thanks to Sharon Haislip, a longtime caregiver of Norman’s.

A visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, 2015, at Bucktrout Funeral Home in Williamsburg. Aa graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Aug. 23, 2015, at Williamsburg Memorial Park.
