The Historic Rivers Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists will be hosting a reception this weekend for the winners of its annual photography contest.
About 15 of the photos submitted for consideration this year are on display at the Williamsburg Regional Library now through Sept. 7. This marks the fifth year the library has displayed photos from the contest.
The contest features three categories: flora, fauna and “other,” which includes anything nature-related that does not neatly fit into the first two categories.
“[The “other” category] lends itself more to creativity,” said Shirley Devan, the club's president.
The idea for the photography contest came about as a result of the passion that several members had for the hobby. Because of the amount of time that Master Naturalists spend outdoors, a nature-oriented photography contest “was a natural fit” for the club, Devan said.
“We have some truly extraordinary photography of things you don’t normally see,” she said.
Most of the photographers who took part in the contest will be present at Saturday’s reception, which will last from 2 to 4 p.m. The reception is free and open to the general public.
Correction 08/14/15: The reception will be held on Sunday, August 16 from 2 to 4 p.m.
