People in need of records from the Williamsburg-James City County Circuit Court can now save themselves a trip to the courthouse by ordering them online.
Deeds, wills, orders, divorce decrees and other documents will be available for order online with the new digital records service run through ClerkePass.
“You can pretty much get everything except marriage licenses, adoption records and things that are sealed,” Chief Deputy Clerk Mona Foley said.
Prior to the implementation of this new system, a person would need to either request a document in person at the clerk’s office or mail in a written request.
ClerkePass allows a person to request a document in digital format from anywhere in the world and receive it in a short amount of time – usually within an hour for requests submitted during business hours.
“So far [using ClerkePass] has really cut back on the amount of mail and postage we have to deal with,” Foley said. “We’ve only had it for a little while but it’s been quick and easy so far.”
Non-certified documents have a $4 transaction fee, while certified documents cost $8.
