The 2015 Bay Rivers District golf season got underway under less than ideal conditions Tuesday as a tornado watch in New Kent County cut short the opening match.

Tuesday’s match at Royal New Kent Golf Club ended after nine holes. By the time the match was called, New Kent had a combined team score of 161, which edged Jamestown by five points for first place.

Leading the way for Jamestown was Will Bell and Triston Buckley, who each recorded 41 on the front nine holes. Matthew Shield and CJ Montero, who each recorded a 42, rounded out the scorers for the Eagles.

Tabb took third place in the match, shooting a combined 179 behind solid rounds from Katrina Warren, 42, and Robert Tulloss, 43. Jordan Stetina added a 46, and Evan Glass finished with a 48.

One of the top rounds of the day was put together by Lafayette’s Jacob Smethurst, who shot a nine-hole 38. Smethurst wound up one stroke off the top score on the day, which was a 37 shot by New Kent’s Parker Wallace.

Smethurst’s solid round helped guide Lafayette to a fourth-place finish with a 185. Rounding out the Lafayette scorers were Tawni Hatcher, 47, Liam Hurley, 49, and Griffin Hurt, 51.

Grafton came up just behind Lafayette in fifth place with 188 points thanks to a 42 by Nathan Groner. Chaz Hoepfner logged a 46, while Adam Sanders notched a 48. Chris Underwood was the final Grafton scorer with a 52.

Bruton claimed seventh in the match behind sub-50 rounds from Sam Carr, 47, and Dylan Jenkins, 48.

Rounding out the bottom three teams in the match was Poquoson in eighth and Warhill and York tied for 10th place. The Lions were paced by Blake Sawyer’s 48, while York saw James Mollencamp put together a solid 42 over nine holes.

All Bay Rivers District teams minus Bruton will continue their season Thursday with a match at Kiln Creek. Bruton, meanwhile, will play head-to-head at King William.
