vpsu loglDespite not winning many events, the Greensprings Gators were able to amass enough points to take home the 2015 Virginia Peninsula Swim Union championship on Sunday.

The championship marks Greensprings’ third championship in as many years after finishing two points shy of a championship in 2012 championships.

Greensprings was led by Kallyn Buirski, a 9-year-old swimmer, who earned first place in three individual events. Buirski was the only Greensprings athlete to take first in three events during the meet.

While Greensprings did not take home the most first place finishes, the Gators were able to land multiple swimmers on the podium and rack up the points.

“I have a ton of talent, but some of them are just swimming exhibition [in the regular season],” said Greensprings coach Jenna Heuser. “We get to a meet like this, some of the kids who swim exhibition are placing in the top 10.”

Despite Greensprings taking home the team championship, other athletes from different teams had success.

In total, five athletes — Charlie Scogna (Queens Lake), Buirski (Greensprings), Lexi Rydland (Stonehouse), Jacob Sprigg (Windsor Forest) and Carter Kale (Windsor Forest) — claimed first in three events, while another 11 won two events.
