Williamsburg Christian Academy is diving into a new athletic venture as the school announced its intention to form a varsity and junior varsity swim team for the upcoming school year.
In a news release July 27, the school announced the formation of a competitive swim program for the first time in the school’s history.
“Swimming has been proposed at WCA frequently in recent years,” said Jeff Sullivan, the program’s coordinator and president of the Stonehouse Splash swim team that competes in the Virginia Peninsula Swim Union.
After multiple students — including talented area swimmers Ben Colley and Caleb Aman — had to grapple with attending Williamsburg Christian Academy or transferring to another program in order to swim at the high school level, Williamsburg Christian Academy decided to go forward with the creation of the program.
The intentions to add a swim program were first made public during the school’s WCA Day event in May, where it was met with a “strong reception.”
Williamsburg Christian Academy’s swim program will be open to all students regardless of experience. Any students interested in swimming will need to provide their own goggles and team swim suits.
Swimmers as young as eighth-graders will be eligible to join the varsity team under Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association rules, while swimmers as young as rising fifth-graders can participate at the junior varsity level.
Williamsburg Christian Academy has started searching for a head coach and hopes to join the ranks of Williamsburg’s competitive swim programs.
“Eagle Swim will be a very developmental team to start, as we establish culture and build team spirit,” Sullivan said. “But we know that if we provide high quality swim instruction, and have fun, team success will be the unavoidable result. We’ll do our best, and let God take care of the rest.”
