Williamsburg Police made three arrests in connection with an armed robbery and abduction on Merrimac Trail early Sunday morning.
A man called the authorities around 5:15 a.m. Sunday, reporting three people – two men and one woman – abducted him and his girlfriend at gunpoint from their apartment on the 100 block of Merrimac Trail.
The couple was forced into a four-door Buick and taken to the Wawa on the 800 block of Merrimac Trail, where the suspects demanded they withdraw cash from the ATM, according to the police report. The amount of money taken is undisclosed at this time.
When the suspects tried to force the couple back into the car, the man refused. The suspects left with the woman in their car, and the man called the authorities.
Officers spotted a car that matched the provided description traveling along Capitol Landing Road toward the interstate minutes after the incident was reported.
With the assistance of the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office, the car was stopped near Exit 242B on Interstate 64 East.
The female victim was not in the car with the suspects at the time of the traffic stop. She was later found at a hotel, where she walked after the suspects dropped her off nearby.
No injuries are reported.
Police arrested Derrick Antoine Smith, 34, of Richmond; Tajaddin Ismael Fardan Daily, 31, of Richmond; and Jameka L. Smith, 33, of Henrico. Investigators do not believe the suspects and victims know each other.
They are each charged with two counts of abduction, two counts of robbery, one count of conspiracy to commit a felony and one count of use of a firearm in commission of a felony; all are felonies.
All three suspects are being held at Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.
This incident marks the fifth armed robbery in the Williamsburg area since the beginning of July, and the second in which arrests have been made.
Williamsburg Police do not believe this robbery is related to the others.
On July 2, a man and woman said a masked man abducted them from a parking lot off Francis and West Duke of Gloucester streets in the city, then forced them to withdraw money from various ATMs in the area.
A day later, a masked man robbed an Upper York County grocery clerk at gunpoint.
On July 9, a man wearing a mask robbed the Langley Federal Credit Union on Richmond Road in the city.
No arrests have been made in the three armed robberies.
YPSO investigators arrested five people in connection with a July 14 armed home invasion on Wilkins Drive off Penniman Road.
