Williamsburg Post 39 rebounded from Tuesday’s loss in the state tournament by blowing past Winchester Post 21 9-1 on Wednesday, keeping Williamsburg’s postseason hopes alive.

A day removed from being unable to score a run against Vienna Post 180, Williamsburg’s offense woke up thanks to the bats of Luke Patterson, Sean Hughes, Zach Calloway and Robert Lipford.

Winchester got on the board Williamsburg early in the bottom of the first as Alexander Dobry scored a run on a sacrifice fly.

Williamsburg responded in the top of the second inning with back-to-back hits from Kent Klyman and Calloway that set up a Lucas Rice walk. With the bases loaded, Patterson drew a four-pitch walk to tie the game at 1-1.

On the next at-bat, Roger Romero smacked a hard ground ball to the second baseman. The ball was bobbled, allowing Romero to reach first base and Calloway to score. Two at-bats later, Hughes was hit by a pitch that allowed Rice to cross home plate.

In the top of the third inning, Calloway sent a long fly ball to right field. Calloway reached second base on the hit, but an errant throw from the Winchester right fielder allowed Calloway to advance to home and give Williamsburg a 4-1 lead.

Williamsburg kept the momentum rolling in the top of the fourth as Sean Hughes hit a long ground ball to the shortstop and beat the throw to first base. While Winchester tried to record the final out of the inning, Romero scored from third base.

After a Lipford walk to open the top of the fifth, Rice singled to right field and brought Lipford across home plate.

The game was put out of reach in the top of the sixth as Hughes and Floyd recorded back-to-back singles with two outs. Lipford followed the singles with a two-run double to left field.

Williamsburg improves to 14-4 on the season with the win and will play the loser of Albemarle and Rocky Mount at 1o a.m Thursday.
