Emergency response teams from the region worked together last week on a training exercise on the James River.

James City County Police Underwater Search and Recovery Team, along with the James City County Fire Department Maritime Incident Response Team, hosted marine patrols from York County and Newport News in a maritime incident exercise July 22 near the First Colony Beach and Marina.

The units were presented with a scenario in which boaters reported a person in their party had not resurfaced while swimming near the boat.

The emergency teams launched a search for the swimmer, which turned into a rescue operation that made use of sonar tools to help in the search.

“This practical exercise created a real-life scenario providing all of the departments the opportunity to work alongside each other in partnership, familiarization with the use of equipment in unison and experience in search, rescue and recovery operations,” according to a joint news release from the JCC police and fire departments.

York County Fire Department Maritime Incident Response, Newport News Fire Department Maritime Response Unit, and Newport News Police Special Operations/Marine Patrol Unit joined the James City County teams for the exercise.
