Three vacant principal positions in Williamsburg-James City County Schools will be filled by current division employees.

Norge and Stonehouse elementary schools and Berkeley Middle School will have new principals for the next school year, all hired from within the division.

Norge and Matthew Whaley elementary schools will also have new assistant principals.

Veronda Matthews will take over the principal position at Norge, replacing Dr. Kimberly Pickles, who stepped down after one year at Norge to move to Germany because her husband accepted a job in that country.

Matthews has served as assistant principal at Norge since August 2013. Prior to becoming an administrator, Matthews spent eight years as an elementary teacher in WJCC. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master of teaching degree from Hampton University, and a master of education in educational leadership degree from the College of William & Mary.

Melissa White will serve as principal at Stonehouse. White replaces Gary Black, who left the school after one year to move closer to his wife’s job in Richmond.

White has served as assistant principal at Rawls Byrd Elementary School since 2012. Prior to that, she was a teacher at Lois. S. Hornsby Middle School from 2006-12. She also taught in Hampton City Public Schools and Isle of Wight County Schools. She received a bachelor’s degree in education from Longwood University and holds a master of education degree from William & Mary.

Amour Mickel was named principal at Berkeley. She replaces Michelle Banks, who left the school after one year to accept a job in Newport News Public Schools.

Mickel has served as assistant principal at Warhill High School since July 2013. Prior to that, she was assistant principal at Berkeley from 2010-13. She also worked in Newport News Public Schools from 2001-2010.

Mickel received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from George Mason University and holds a master’s degree in education administration and leadership from Old Dominion University.

In addition to the new principals, Heather Evans will come on as assistant principal at Norge, and Thomas Kenney will serve as assistant principal at Matthew Whaley. Evans comes to WJCC from Middlesex County Public Schools, while Kenney is relocating from Alexandria City Public Schools.
