After defeating Hampton Post 31 by a final score of 19-2 on Thursday evening, Williamsburg Post 39 became District 3 champions after Hampton withdrew from the tournament.
The forfeit hands Williamsburg its third consecutive District 3 title and allows the team to turn its attention to getting over the hump and claiming a state championship.
In the third round of last year’s state tournament, Leesburg Post 34 handed Williamsburg a 9-8 extra-innings defeat – an ending Williamsburg head coach Tom Richardson referred to as “miserable” – to end the team’s postseason run.
This year, Williamsburg will open the state tournament against Albemarle Post 74 with the hopes of reaching the final round of competition.
Williamsburg carries a 13-3 record heading into the state tournament and it begins play in Fredericksburg at Riverbend High School.
The first pitch between Williamsburg and Albemarle is expected for 5 p.m. Tuesday.
