Deacon Joe W. McMiller Sr., of Williamsburg, died Sunday, July 19, 2015, at his home after a lengthy illness. He was 85.
He was a loving son, brother, veteran, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to many.
He was born July 7, 1930, son of the late Allan McMiller, of Chicago and the late Elizabeth Porter McMiller Ratcliff in Jayess, Mississippi.
He accepted Christ at an early age and was a dedicated and active member of St. John Baptist Church in Williamsburg.
Deacon McMiller was preceded in death by his first wife, Bertha Mingo McMiller; daughter, Belinda Jo McMiller; brothers, Calvin McMiller, Windford Ratcliff, J.T. Ratcliff and Harvey Ratcliff Jr.; and sisters, Daisy and Lee Etta Ratcliff.
He later met and married Martha Parker McMiller (now deceased), of Surry, in 1984. He not only married her, he married her family as well. He then joined Lebanon Baptist Church where he was ordained a deacon on June 13, 1993, and he remained a faithful member until his health declined.
Deacon McMiller was a kind and generous man. He had a big heart and wanted to give help to everyone. He worked many tiring years and retired after many years of dedicated service at Colonial Williamsburg and Eastern State Hospital.
After retirement he joined the Food Lion family. He loved that job and was excited at the end of a work day because he had seen and fellowshipped with so many of his friends. He had to leave Food Lion when his eyesight began to fail him.
He leaves to cherish his memories his children, Carl (Gail) McMiller, of Columbia, Mississippi, Mary (Herman) Robinson, of Toano, Joe W. McMiller Jr. (Laura), of Williamsburg, Melvin McMiller, of Jayess, Mississippi, Bruce McMiller (fiancé Gwen Robertson), of Williamsburg, Aretha McMiller (fiancé Winfred Wallace III), of Williamsburg, Angela Cephas, of Newport News, James Parker (Laura), Theresa Parker and Juanita Parker, all of Spring Grove, Katrina Parker and Glinda Dunn, both of Charlotte, North Carolina and Ann (William) Hampton, of Hampton; brothers, George (Etta) Ratcliff and Jewel Ratcliff, both of Jayess, Mississippi and Theodore Ratcliff, of Tylertown, Mississippi; sisters, Sarah (Ellis) Ratcliff and Leila (John) Peters, both of Jayess, Mississippi; 25 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; and a host of other loving relatives and many caring friends.
