Law enforcement organizations will be on site in neighborhoods throughout the Historic Triangle on Aug. 4 to celebrate National Night Out.
National Night Out is an annual event meant to bring together law enforcement officers and the communities they serve in an informal setting.
Officers from all three Historic Triangle localities will be participating this year.
James City County currently has 20 neighborhoods signed up for the event, according to Master Police Officer Kelly Connors. She said about 50 police officers will participate in the event, with five to six vehicles showing up to each neighborhood for 20 to 30 minutes from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 4.
“We give out goody bags with coloring books and stickers for the kids and interact with the community,” she said.
Many of the neighborhoods are planning block parties, cookouts, pool parties and ice cream socials, she said. McGruff the Crime Dog is expected to join the officers at several of the neighborhoods.
In Williamsburg, the police department will host a National Night Out event at the Community Building on North Boundary Street. Attendees can expect games, a helmet giveaway for children, free hog dogs and hamburgers, and Bubbles the clown, Master Police Officer Tim Walker said.
The Williamsburg event runs from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 4. Walker said the department is too small to dispatch officers to neighborhoods throughout the city.
“Last year I decided to do one big event and it worked out really well,” he said.
In York County, an event will be held at Langley Family Housing in Tabb from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 4, Deputy Alan Bartnikowski said.
“We have all types of information, whether it’s home security, identity theft and scam literature, child ID kits,” he said “We give a presentation on residential security where we come out and set up a display of different types of locks and peep holes and things like that.”
Another National Night Event will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 29 in the York County portion of Kiln Creek.
The James City County neighborhoods participating in National Night Out are Conway Apartments, Lafayette Apartments, the Woods of Williamsburg, Chisel Run II, Stonegate Apartments, Carter’s Village, Skiffes Creek, Longhill Station, Longhill Grove, Powhatan Apartments, Drummonds Field, Fenwick Hills, Toano Trace, Fieldcrest, Burnt Ordinary Apartments, Lakewood, Wexford Hills, Great Woods, Chickahominy Road and Windsor Forest.
Connors said James City County neighborhoods can still apply to have a National Night Out celebration by calling her at 603-6023.
