Sean Hughes capped off Williamsburg Post 39’s regular season in style, going a perfect 5-of-5 from the plate with 6 RBIs during a 17-4 home victory over Gloucester Post 75.
The game was called due to American Legion’s 10-run rule in the seventh inning.
Roger Romero started the scoring for Williamsburg in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single to center field, which was followed by Christopher Jones scoring on a passed ball on the next at-bat.
Hughes started his successful day from the plate with an RBI single to center field that put Williamsburg up 3-0. Later that inning, Kent Klyman delivered a two-run double to center, which was followed by a Lucas Rice RBI single to center.
After tacking on two more runs in the bottom of the second inning, Hughes continued his hot streak by hitting an RBI double to center field.
Williamsburg continued its momentum in the bottom of the fifth inning with Klyman scoring on a passed ball. Romero reached on an error three at-bats later, which allowed Lipford to cross home plate.
Hughes followed up the error with a two-run single to right field, which was followed up by a Floyd RBI single to right. Zach Calloway got into the action with an RBI single to right that brought Hughes across home plate.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Hughes capped off his stellar game with a two-run single to left field that put Williamsburg up 17-3.
The win caps Williamsburg’s (12-3) regular season as the team prepares to take play in the American Legion Virginia state tournament, which begins July 28.
