A normally potent Williamsburg Post 39 lineup put together an underwhelming performance Thursday evening during a 4-2 home loss against Poquoson Post 273.
Despite recording eight hits, Williamsburg put up two runs against Poquoson, which logged four runs on three hits.
Williamsburg got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning as Corey Williams scored from third base on a passed ball. During the next at-bat, Christopher Jones followed Williams’ lead, scoring on a passed ball to give Williamsburg a 2-0 lead.
Poquoson answered back quickly, responding with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Nick Hunter delivered a two-run single to left field to tie the game at 2-2.
Robbie Barrett of Poquoson and Kent Klyman of Williamsburg were locked into a pitchers’ duel through the middle innings. Klyman threw six innings, allowing one hit and striking out 11 batters, while Barrett went the distance, allowing eight hits but no earned runs.
In the top of the eighth inning, with Ryan Mason in as a relief pitcher for Williamsburg, Poquoson took advantage of sloppy pitching to score the game-winning runs.
Mason opened the inning by hitting Jake Berrena before walking the next batter. Hunter followed the walk with an RBI single to left field to give Poquoson a 3-2 lead.
Back-to-back hit batters by Mason allowed the game’s final run to score, giving Poquoson a 4-2 victory.
Williamsburg (11-3) will play its final regular season game Friday evening at home against Gloucester Post 75.
