The Peninsula Health District is asking the public for help locating a small, tan dog that bit a child Tuesday near Howard Drive in Grove.
Howard Drive is one of several residential streets located across Pocahontas Trail from The Woods golf course.
If the dog is not located, the child may have to receive several post-exposure shots for the prevention of rabies.
Should the authorities locate the dog, it will be placed on in-home confinement for 10 day. Anyone who has seen a small, tan dog in the area of Howard Street in Grove should call the Peninsula Health District at 603-4277. After hours, contact James City County Animal Control at 253-1800.
Residents are asked to report all exposures, enjoy wildlife from a distance and make sure their family pets are vaccinated and protected against the rabies virus.
Virginia state law requires dogs and cats to be vaccinated between 3 and 4 months of age and thereafter to maintain protection against rabies.
