Gloria Jean (Grottendieck) Shaffer, of Williamsburg, died June 29, 2015, at the age of 59.

She was born in Baltimore, the daughter of Glenn and Rita (Espey) Grottendieck.

She grew up in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, where she met her husband John. In 1977, they moved to the Peninsula area of Virginia and made a life for themselves.

Gloria was a nurse, respiratory therapist and an advocate for children with disabilities. Her favorite phrase was, “smile and the world will smile back.”

She is survived by her husband, John; sister, Melva; children, Christopher and Amy; and other loving relatives and many caring friends, who were all very special to her.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the American Cancer Society in her honor.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, 2015, at York River Baptist Church, 8201 Croaker Road, Williamsburg, VA 23188, followed by a reception.
