Williamsburg Post 39 won a pair of seven-inning road games against the Oscar Smith Tigers on Sunday.
The visiting Williamsburg team had no problem scoring runs in either game against Oscar Smith, winning the first game 11-3 and the second game 11-4.
Williamsburg battled back and forth with the Tigers during the early innings of the opening contest.
Zach Calloway started the scoring with an RBI triple that followed a scored run off a wild pitch.
After surrendering a run in the bottom of the second, Calloway again delivered for Williamsburg, this time by the way of an RBI single in the top of the third inning to put Williamsburg up 3-1.
Oscar Smith tied the game in the bottom of the third inning, scoring on a double and a fielding error.
Williamsburg added a run in the top of the fourth – an RBI groundout from Luke Patterson – to give the visitors a 4-3 lead that was carried into the top of the seventh inning.
Post 39 blew the game open in the top of the seventh, scoring the opening three runs of the inning on passed balls by Oscar Smith.
Up 7-3, Robert Lipford hit into an RBI groundout to drive Calloway home. Three at-bats later, Christopher Jones drove in Sean Hughes on a double to left field, which was immediately followed by a two-run single by Patterson for the final runs of the game.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Williamsburg again waited until the later innings to do its damage at the plate.
Similar to the first game, Williamsburg jumped in front in the early going. Matt Lansford drilled a hard ground ball to third base, which prompted a fielding error by Oscar Smith. The error allowed a pair of runs to score, putting Williamsburg on top 2-0.
An Oscar Smith solo home run in the bottom of the second inning cut the celebration short, but Williamsburg would answer in a big way during the top of the fifth inning.
Williamsburg opened the top of the fifth inning by scoring on an Oscar Smith fielding error before Kent Klyman delivered a two-run single to left field three at-bats later to put Post 39 up 5-1.
Jones followed up the Klyman single with an RBI single of his own during the next at-bat. Kyle Morgan kept the offensive train rolling along, smacking a three-run double to center field.
Another fielding error by Oscar Smith allowed the eighth run of the inning to score for Williamsburg, giving Post 39 a 10-1 lead.
Oscar Smith added three runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the threat was short-lived as Williamsburg added a security run in the top of the sixth to put the game away.
Williamsburg Post 39 (5-0) will continue its season against Gloucester Post 75 at 7 p.m. Monday at Warhill High School.
