Three consecutive base hits in the bottom of the seventh inning helped lift Williamsburg Post 39 to a 4-2 win at home against Gloucester Post 75 on Monday.
Williamsburg starter Blake Otey began the game with erratic pitching, walking the first two batters before throwing a ball over the catcher’s head to advance both runners. On the next at-bat, Otey allowed an RBI single to put Williamsburg into a quick 1-0 hole.
The Ferrum College right-hander settled down and allowed just two hits over the next 5 1/3 innings before being taken out in favor of relief pitcher Ryan Mason.
Sean Hughes of Williamsburg answered Gloucester’s first-inning score with one of his own, sending a line drive underneath a diving shortstop to bring in a run.
After Williamsburg surrendered a run in the top of the fourth inning, Hughes came up big again in the bottom of the fourth as a Gloucester fielding error allowed Hughes to steal two bases, including home to tie the game at 2-2.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Luke Patterson started off the game-changing rally with a double to center field. Patterson’s double was followed by a Christopher Jones RBI double, giving Williamsburg a 3-2 lead.
For good measure, Williamsburg tacked on one more run as Roger Romero singled to left field, bringing home the game’s final run.
Williamsburg (6-0) will try to continue its perfect season when it travels to take on Poquoson Post 273 at Poquoson High School on Tuesday.
