Williamsburg Parks and Recreation has opened registration for a high school basketball team camp Aug. 8 and 9.
The camp, which will be hosted at the Quarterpath Recreation Center, is open for girls and boys high school varsity teams.
With a $225 entry fee per team – individuals cannot register for the tournament – each team is guaranteed at least four games with three in a round-robin group format that transitions into a single-elimination tournament after pool play is finished.
Games in the tournament will consist of two 20-minute halves that will be played with a running clock. Spectators hoping to watch the action can do so for free, with no entry fee at the door.
Williamsburg Parks and Recreation recreation supervisor Tyler Cobb said the first-time tournament hopes to fill a niche within the Historic Triangle.
“We kind of just wanted to tap into the high school market,” he said. “There weren’t any camps in the Williamsburg area for high school teams.”
Cobb said the tournament will provide a good opportunity for coaches and players to become familiar with each other during the offseason. The tournament also gives teams a chance to work on strategies they could employ next season.
A four-team minimum per gender division is needed for the tournament to take place, allowing Williamsburg Parks and Rec to guarantee each team at least four games.
Anyone wanting to register for the team can do so at the Quarterpath Recreation Center or over the phone by calling Cobb at 757-259-3760. Registration for the tournament ends Aug. 3.
