Jamestown junior Evan Lowery earned Group 4A first-team All-State honors on Monday, while two Grafton players earned second-team recognition.

“It’s pretty exciting,” Jamestown coach Mike Kuebler said of having Lowery back next season. “Evan is pretty far advanced. He plays like a junior in college. To have someone like him come back next year, it will really help our program and our team next year.”

Lowery batted an impressive .500 on the season, driving home 23 RBIs and belting nine home runs for the Eagles. While he thrived at the plate, Lowery was equally impressive as a center fielder. Lowery regularly made clutch grabs in the outfield with runners in scoring position, keeping Jamestown in plenty of games.

Beyond his on-field performances, Kuebler praised Lowery’s leadership qualities.

“One of his major strengths is his leadership,” Kuebler said. “Verbally and non-verbally, he brings everybody up. He leads by example, always hustling to center field whether he made the last out or we just had a missed opportunity on offense. Guys see that and they follow him.”

Grafton’s two second-team All-State selections were first baseman Evan Sperling and catcher Jordan Sprouse.

Sperling, a pitching commit for the University of Virginia, held a .420 batting average with 31 RBIs. Sprouse, a Virginia Wesleyan commit, posted a .403 batting average with 16 RBIs for the Clippers.

Matt Lewellen, Grafton’s head baseball coach, said was pleased to see two of his seniors going out with All-State honors.

“It’s great for them to be recognized as individuals who came together as a team,” he said. “I am proud of their efforts this year and I’m looking forward to following them during their college baseball years.
