Two Historic Triangle girls soccer players were given first-team All-State honors Tuesday, while another five were named to the Group 4A All-State second team.
The two first-team selections were Jamestown defender Maddie Clevinger and Tabb forward Leah Tyson.
Clevinger, a junior, was instrumental in Jamestown’s run to the 4A South semifinals, helping hold down the Jamestown back line as a center back.
“She’s been a rock-solid center back for us,” Jamestown head coach Michelle Dawson said of Clevinger. “Out of 14 games, we allowed only 15 goals. I really believe that’s because of her strength back there.”
Tyson, the Conference 19 Player of the Year, garnered first-team All-State honors after scoring 22 goals during her junior campaign.
“She was our leading scorer and actually through about the first three quarters of the season, she outshot any other player on our team by about 50 percent,” Tabb coach Kelle Shiflett said of Tyson. “She was definitely a leader in that respect but she was also a captain, so she was a leader and motivator off the field.”
Of the five Historic Triangle second-team All-State selections, three came from Jamestown. The three Jamestown players selected were forward Morgan Connell, midfielder Shannon Fitzgerald and goalkeeper Juliette Sim.
Connell, who will be attending Duquesne University, was a senior captain for the Eagles and scored 15 goals while adding six assists.
“She’s just a really good striker for us,” Dawson said of Connell. “She scored some critical gals for us when we needed them through regionals.”
Fitzgerald and Sim helped keep opposing teams from finding the back of the net, with Fitzgerald serving as an emotional leader for the team and Sim acting as a brick wall in the net, allowing .9 goals per game on the season.
The two Tabb second-team selections were midfielder Madalynn Grounds and defender Lakaiah Robinson.
Grounds proved to be a reliable second option for the Tigers when Tyson was covered by an opposing team’s best defenders. Shiflett also praised Grounds’ chemistry with Tyson on the field.
“I think a lot of what she brought was her and Leah played well together,” Shiflett said of Grounds. “She was able to, a lot of times, feed the ball from one side to another or get the ball to Leah. Or if Leah was marked, she was able to get the ball where it needed to be.”
Of Robinson, Shiflett praised her steady defending after playing at the center forward position during her sophomore year. Despite the drastic position switch, Robinson came in and became the rock of the Tigers defense.
“She was mainly our rock in the back, our person we look to,” Shiflett said. “She can see the whole field and make runs that end in goal scoring opportunities. She was a strong presence in the back. We couldn’t have gotten where we did without her holding everything together in the back.”
