Dr. Montague Leonard Martin, of Yorktown, died Sunday, June 21, 2015.

He was a lifelong Peninsula resident, graduating from Warwick High School. He attended the Newport News Apprentice School and graduated from Lynchburg College in three years. In 1963 he received his DDS from the Medical College of Virginia and opened up his dental practice in Newport News in 1964. He retired in 2010 after 47 years in practice.

He was a member of the Peninsula Dental Society and the Virginia Dental Association. He was an active member of the Warwick Lions Club for 48 years and was known as “Rooster” at the annual Lion’s Club Variety Show. He served on the Board of Directors and was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award for outstanding lionism.

In his free time, he loved carpentry work and built two of his own homes and a boat.

Dr. Martin was preceded in death by his sister, Jane Givens.

He is survived by his beloved daughters, Shannon Martin and her husband Erik Abkemeier, of Newport News and Mandy Martin, of Virginia Beach; his grandsons, Andrew and Jonathan Abkemeir; and his nephews, Martin, David and Steve Givens.

A celebration of his life will be celebrated at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 25, 2015, at Weymouth Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
