WJCC LogoThree schools in the Williamsburg-James City County school division are looking for new principals for the next school year.

Kimberly Pickles of Norge Elementary School and Gary Black of Stonehouse Elementary School have both stepped down, as has Michelle Banks of Berkeley Middle School. Each of the three administrators resigned from their positions in June to pursue other opportunities, the school division confirmed Monday.

Pickles left Norge to move to Germany with her husband, who accepted a job there. She had just completed her first year at Norge, replacing longtime principal Nancy Catano, who retired at the end of the 2013-14 school year.

Pickles had worked in WJCC schools since 2005, and had previously served as principal at Stonehouse, interim principal at Toano Middle School, and assistant principal at Matoaka and D. J. Montague elementary schools.

Gary Black left Stonehouse for a job closer to his home in Richmond, WJCC Director of Public Relations and Engagement Betsy Overkamp-Smith said in an email. Black had finished his first year at Stonehouse, after spending two years as principal at Palmer Elementary School in Newport News.

Black received a bachelor’s degree from Grove City College in Pennsylvania, a master’s degree from the University of Virginia and a post master’s certification in administration from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Michelle Banks resigned as principal at Berkeley to accept a job in Newport News Public Schools. Banks had been at Berkeley for one year, replacing Karen Swann, who transferred to Rawls Byrd Elementary School.

Banks previously worked in Newport News schools from 1998-2013. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Christopher Newport University and a master’s degree in education from Old Dominion University.

All three positions have been posted to the school division’s job board, seeking candidates with master’s degrees and “considerable” experience in the classroom. The advertised salary ranges for the open positions are $69,576 to $90,459 for Norge and Stonehouse, and $74,859 to $97,323 for Berkeley.
