Beginning July 31, the Marl Inn Bed and Breakfast in Yorktown will have a new owner.

York County native Thomas Nelson and his wife Poppet have owned and operated the B&B on Church Street since 2009 and have decided it’s time to move to Nelson County, where Tom Nelson will focus on his writing.

He has sold the colonial-style house to Amy and Apostolos Demetry, a couple from Maryland who have been looking to purchase a B&B in the area.

Nelson said the couple was staying at Boxwood Inn in nearby Newport News when they were informed of the Marl Inn, which had been for sale for about two years.

Built in 1978, the inn was restored in 2001 and features four suites with a bedroom, kitchen and living room. Guests can choose between three breakfast options during their stay.

Although he would not disclose the sale price, Nelson called the Amy and Apostolos Demetry the “perfect” couple to take over the inn.

“I think it’s a good transition for us at this time,” Nelson said. “I’m just so happy that this new family coming in, is of like mind and will continue the operation of the Marl Inn like we have in caring for people and being hospitable.”
