Legacy 76 dropped a 3-0 decision to the National Premier Soccer League’s top team in the Northeast Division, Virginia Beach City FC, in front of its home crowd at Wanner Stadium on Sunday night.
With temperatures in the upper 90s and the game being played on artificial turf, which increases the on-field heat index, both teams came out of the gates slowly in the first half while trying to preserve fresh legs.
After a scoreless first half, Virginia Beach City FC scored the game’s opening goal in the 60th minute. Legacy 76 goalkeeper Nolan Mann lost control of a Virginia Beach City FC cross, which fell to the feet of Mike Horrell.
The Virginia Beach City FC forward volleyed the ball out of the air and into the back of the net for the game’s opening score.
Roughly 20 minutes later, Virginia Beach City FC (5-0-2) found the back of the net once again, this time coming off a penalty kick. Mann made up for his earlier blunder on the cross, stopping the penalty kick.
However, the rebound was put back by TJ Cyrus for Virginia Beach City FC’s second goal of the game.
Legacy 76, in an attempt to net a late goal, pushed up attackers and was caught off guard by a Virginia Beach City FC counter attack. Matt Hall beat the Legacy 76 defensive line to score the game’s final goal.
The loss marks Legacy 76’s fourth loss in its last five contests. Legacy 76 played FC Frederick to a 1-1 draw on June 14.
After a long layoff, Legacy 76 (1-5-2) will resume its season July 5 on the road against Fredericksburg FC in a game that will be played at Captain’s Stadium at Christopher Newport University.
