Two York County schools will be led next year by longtime school division employees.

The York County School Division announced Tuesday Dr. Shannon Butler as the new principal of York High School, and Kelly Denny as the principal of Yorktown Elementary.

Butler replaces Kendra Crump, who left the school division earlier this month to accept a position with the Virginia Department of Education.

Denny will take over for Karen Washington, who decided to return to the classroom as an English teacher at Tabb Middle School.

Butler has worked in the school division since 2006, when she began as an instructional specialist. She has worked as an assistant principal at Bruton High School since 2011. She received a bachelor’s degree from East Carolina University, a master’s degree from Old Dominion University and a doctorate from the College of William & Mary.

Denny came to YCSD in 1998 as a teacher at Grafton-Bethel Elementary School. She received her first assistant principal assignment in 2011 at Mt. Vernon Elementary School, and has spent the last two years as an assistant principal at Yorktown Elementary.
