Henry H. Carter, 97, Morning Star Baptist Church deacon

Henry H. Carter died Saturday, June 13, 2015, at Riverside Regional Medical Center. He was 97.

His life began on Sept. 10, 1917, the son of the late George and Lula Carter, of Yorktown. At an early age, he joined Rising Sun Baptist Church in Lackey. Later in life, he joined hands in fellowship with Morning Star Baptist Church, in Williamsburg where he served his church as a deacon under the pastorship of the Rev. Billy Florence.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Retha Robinson Carter, seven brothers and four sisters.

He leaves to cherish his blessed memories his wife, Rosa Lee Whitby Carter; his son, John H. Whitby; his stepdaughters, Delores Mooring and Kathy Turner; his stepson, Lee Whitby; his three other stepsons; his five other stepdaughters; 11 grandchildren (five girls and six boys); his niece, Elizabeth Carter Eaves, of Greenville, Kentucky; his nephews, Howard Carter (Geneva), of Hampton, Melvin Carter (Priscilla), of Newport News, John Carter (Doreen), of Louisville, Kentucky and Walter Carter, of Silver Spring, Maryland; and a host of cousins and friends.

A funeral service, celebrating the life he lived, will be held at noon on Thursday, June 18, 2015, at Whiting’s Chapel with the Rev. Billy Florence officiating. Interment will follow at Morning Star Baptist Church Cemetery.
